Concerto Koln & Marie Sophie Pollak & Max Volbers
Description:
A confrontation project that shows the differences in style,,This album compares Bach's and Scheibe's works side by side, with seven of the 13 pieces being vocal arias and six instrumental pieces included among the vocal pieces. Scheibe, who grew up in Leipzig and whose father was a friend of Bach's, moved to Hamburg, where he founded the music review magazine Critical Musician with the support of Telemann and Mattezone. In the magazine, Scheibe criticized Bach's vocal music mainly from a performance point of view, while praising his keyboard music, and his criticisms, both positive and negative, caused controversy. In the Lutheran and other Protestant areas, texts derived from the Bible were important to professional musicians. They often chose similar material, in part because of the territorial (court or municipality) administration of churches, which employed professional musicians to conduct services. Bach wrote a great deal of worship music, and many of his works overlap with those of other composers, but he also shares some subjects with Scheibe, who was born in Leipzig and is a generation younger. This album is a collection of arias, sinfonias, and sonatas from those works. This is also because chorales (hymns) are used as common musical material in Protestant worship services, and it is more effective to arrange the original parts in order to confirm the individuality of the composer. The Concerto Cologne, which has been in existence for 40 years, is a group of masters of old music ensembles, and in this album, they create complex yet transparent textures with exquisite intonation, rhythmic sense, and the skill of each part's entry and exit. In Sinfonia BWV 1045 (track 15), the presence of each part, including the organ which can be heard from 2:52, is wonderful, and it clearly shows that this piece, usually treated as a violin concerto, is actually a Brandenburg Concerto-style masterpiece with a lot of information. The booklet (20 pages, in English and German) includes a lucid commentary on Bach and Scheibe by performer Max Folbers and a comparison of the two, as well as the German lyrics of the arias.
