The new work by popular Latvian organist Iveta Apkarna is a collection of modern and contemporary works on the theme of the sea (oceans). Two concertos by contemporary composers, "Okeanos" and "The Voice of the Sea," make full use of the varied acoustics of the modern organ. The combination is a modern orchestral piece, Ravel's "Little Boat of the Sea" and Sibelius' "Goddess of the Ocean". The rich Norwegian international orchestra (23 nationalities of musicians), the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Latvian conductor Andris Poga. The hall has excellent acoustics. The work is in four movements, each movement titled after one of the four elements, and is performed by the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra. It is a truly interesting work in which the orchestra intertwines with a variety of sounds that take advantage of the organ's virtuosity and the capabilities of modern organs. Ravel: "Little Boat on the Sea" was originally composed for piano in 1905, and Ravel himself completed the orchestral arrangement in 1906. Although Ravel himself liked the piece, he forbade its performance because it was not well received, but it is still a wonderful orchestration when heard today. Sibelius: "The Goddess of the Ocean," a symphonic poem completed in 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I. It was written around the same time as Symphony No. 5. It was written around the same time as Symphony No. 5, and is full of Sibelius-like phrases, including one that foreshadows his later Symphony No. 7. The work expressively depicts the playfulness of the "Daughters of the Wave," which is also the Finnish title, and the immensity of the sea. Eschenwaltz: "Voices of the Sea," a "concerto for organ, flute, string orchestra and percussion" written for Apkarna by Eriks Eschenwaltz, born in Priekle, Latvia, in 1977, at Riga Cathedral, Apkarna and Dita Kremberga, flute, It was premiered in September 2014 by the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andris Poga. The first movement begins with a magnificent all-around performance in the opening figures of Bach's Toccata and Fugue, then subsides, followed by lyrical and beautiful music, and eventually the opening motive is woven into the music, which again reaches a magnificent climax.The second movement is a fascinating work in which the flute solo, strings, and organ textures create a minimalist contemplative quality. The sound of the vibraphonist "playing" the short side of the soundboard with the double bass bow is dreamily beautiful. The third movement is literally maestoso music, and the organ pedals are very active and powerful, but it eventually subsides and ends lyrically. There is a version of this work in which the flute solo is replaced by a violin solo in the "Concerto for Organ and String Orchestra," but the original flute version has the advantage in terms of richness of color. The composer, Eschenwaldt, studied at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Latvia from 1995 to 1997, and received a master's degree in composition from the Latvian Music Academy in 2004. He is also active as a choral conductor and has composed many choral works, but the intimate beauty of this organ concerto also evokes the association of organ = church = place of prayer. (1/2)
