Description:
F=Dieskau and Wunderlich showcase their fresh and beautiful voices! Newly reissued from the original ETERNA analog tape. World's first SACD release! Mastered only in the analog domain and directly converted to DSD! This recording was made in February 1960, the year before the Berlin Wall was erected, as a joint production of two record companies, Electrola and Eterna. The recording venue was the Grünewald Church on the west side of the city at that time. The recording was made at the Grünewald Church in the west of the city. The singers include F. Dieskau, Wunderlich, and Schock, and the recording was conducted by Konwitschny, who was the general music director of the Staatskapelle Berlin at the time. The recording is excellent for its age, and the high quality of the performance technique and the high aspirations of the production team are evident in the content, indicating the considerable effort that was put into the project. Konwitschny and SKB also recorded "Tannhäuser" in October 1960 with the same producer, engineer, and other members of the same production team. The Dutchman" was released on Eterna, and "Tannhäuser" on Electrola (TDSA187 will be reissued in 2021 as a Tower Project disc on SACD hybrid). Both recordings are equally fresh, and although the reissue process differs slightly between this project and the Definition Series of "Tannhäuser," this release also allows us to enjoy the difference in sound quality due to the difference in labels. The performances are the best of their time, and the sensitive expressiveness and beauty of the young F. Dieskau's voice, Schock's strong presence, Frick's skill, and, above all, Wunderlich's extremely beautiful voice, all of which explain why this disc is still highly regarded. It was Konwitschny's final years, and the fact that it has been preserved in stereo is a rarity in itself, but it is certainly an important recording in terms of recording history, as it captures the last brightness of Berlin just before it was divided into East and West. The orchestra's traditional North German sound is clearly preserved in this recording, and together with "Tannhäuser," it conveys the atmosphere of that period to the present day. We are pleased to reissue this top-quality recording in its best form. Please note that since this project was edited and mastered only in the analog domain, we did not cut or edit out any noise or tape joints that could be removed by digital editing, so some parts reflect the state of the master tape as is.
