Monteverdi's 450th Anniversary "Poppea" in three different productions 2017 marks the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi's birth. This video box set includes three discs of Monteverdi's last masterpiece opera, "The Crowning of Poppea". Monteverdi was appointed music director of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice in 1613 and spent the last 30 years of his life in Venice until his death in 1843. More than 30 years after the publication of "Orfeo," considered the first masterpiece in the history of opera, he composed "The Crowning of Poppea. The opera is based on the "Chronicle of Tocitus," set in ancient Rome, and tells the story of Poppea, who is favored by the Emperor Nero, who ousts the Empress Octavia and finally takes her place as his successor. Although the opera is set in ancient Rome, the human drama that unfolds there has similarities to today, and Monteverdi vividly portrays each character with his music, The Crowning of Poppea" directed by Ole Anders Tamberg and conducted by Alejandro de Marchi.DVD2 is a live performance from the Schwetzingen Festival, directed by Michael Hampe and conducted by René Jacobs. Hampe's direction clearly depicts the contrast between the bad guys in "red" and the good guys in "black," as they follow their own desires, while Jacobs' precise tempo setting and delicate and inventive choice and use of instrumental tones are superb. And on DVD3, "POPPEA//POPPEA" is a stage performance by Christian Spück, who has been the choreographer of the Stuttgart Ballet and is currently the artistic director of the Zurich Ballet, and Gauthier Dance, a dance company led by Eric Gauthier.
