One of today's most sought-after conductors, Karina Kanellakis has been Principal Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra since 2019, and her releases on the PENTATONE label of Bartók's Four Orchestral Pieces and Concerto for Orchestra are "truly charming and superbly designed music" (BBC Music Magazine). His releases on the PENTATONE label of Bartók's Four Orchestral Works and Concerto for Orchestra have received international acclaim, including a Grammy nomination, and have been described as "truly fascinating and brilliantly designed" (BBC Music Magazine) and "the conducting and orchestra paint soundscapes with both delicacy and fire" (Grammophon Magazine). The duo's second release on the PENTATONE label is Bartók's only opera, "Bluebeard's Castle. Although it is an opera in one act with only two characters, Prince Bluebeard and his new wife Judith, it is an intense drama in a large orchestral setting. This work was dedicated to Bartók's wife, Márta. Kanellakis describes the work as "a tribute to life, to fleeting beauty, to being human, to love, and to death.Rinat Shaham and Gabor Bretz, who have performed the work many times before, are the soloists in this dramatic performance. Kanellakis is an American conductor and violinist who was attracted to Perlman's playing and began learning the violin. While a student at the Karajan Academy, he was a violinist with the Berlin Philharmonic. It was during this time that Sir Simon Rattle discovered his talent as a conductor after hearing Kanellakis perform Schoenberg's "Night of the Pure Night" as first violinist, and he pursued conducting while studying violin. He made his debut as a professional conductor in 2013. Since then, he has steadily built up his career, becoming Principal Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2019, and Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2020.
