Lara Downs is also known as a producer, curator, and cultural activist who has spoken out on issues of racism in the United States. His second album for the PENTATONE label, following "Love at Last," is "Dis Land (This Country)," which focuses on the history of American music. Davens has completed an album with a strong message while tracing the history of the United States. This year (2024) marks the 100th anniversary of the first performance of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue. To commemorate this anniversary, Davens commissioned Edmar Colon, the greatest saxophonist and arranger of our time, to arrange the piece, and "Rhapsody in Blue Reimagined" was born. As the title suggests, the piece was reconstructed and reimagined into a large piece with a playing time of over 27 minutes. The piece looks back on a century of immigration and change in the United States, and features ethnic Chinese instruments such as the erhu, batadrums, and Afro-Caribbean percussion instruments. It is a strong expression of the coexistence of all races living on this continent. This premiere and world premiere recording under the direction of Edwin Outwater was a great success. This work has been released on various distribution sites and is attracting attention as a hot new work mainly in the United States. In the final track, Davens reads liner notes (poems) written by Davens, backed by historical recordings of Rhapsody in Blue played by Gershwin and his own performance. The music traces the history of the United States, with Davens' performance and poetry. The booklet also includes numerous photographs. *No Japanese obi is included. Sound sources used in some of the songs (1)There'll Be Some Changes Made / Ethel Waters (vocal) & The Jazz Masters (Black Swan Records, 1921) (4)Birdsong (nature sound recorded in Arizona by Michael Begay) (10)Rhapsody in Blue / George Gershwin(piano) & Paul Whiteman Orchestra(Victor, 1924) (King International)
