Capella Amsterdam, founded in 1970 and recorded from an autograph score with Schnittke's clear intentions, has been under the musical direction of Daniel Reuss since 1990 and offers a full range of vocal works from the Renaissance to the present day. This time they take on Schnittke's large-scale work. Schnittke's "Psalm of Conversion" was composed in 1988 to commemorate the millennium of Christian baptism in Russia. It is a work of Schnittke at the height of his maturity, and it fully demonstrates the expressive power and effectiveness of the human voice. For the recording, conductor Reuss chose to use the autograph score under the supervision of cellist Ivashkin, who is well known for his research on Schnittke. The autograph score was almost entirely devoid of dynamics, did not indicate time signatures or phrasing, and even the notes were different. In the printed score, the final D-major main chord has an additional m-flat, but not in the autograph, making clear Schnittke's intention to end on the D (D) note as a symbol of Deus (God).
