This 1989 full-length album, released by SATAN—a legendary band of the N.W.O.B.H.M.—after they changed their name to PARIAH in 1988–1989, is a cult classic that has been reissued by HAMMERHEART. The album’s defining characteristic is its ability to exude a unique identity that defies categorization into a single genre, while maintaining the ferocity of pure, high-octane thrash metal at its core. Elements of heavy metal, NWOBHM, and thrash are highly fused, creating a sophisticated sound that defies easy categorization. The twin guitar work of Russ Tippins and Steve Ramsey has consistently defined the band’s identity since their SATAN days. On this album, they reach a level of perfection that could be called the culmination of their evolution; the musicality they’ve explored—from early NWOBHM through the experimentalism of *Blind Fury* and the NWOBHM/thrash fusion of *The Kindred*—has finally taken clear shape here. While evoking a return to *Suspended Sentence*, every detail has been polished to perfection. The album is guitar-driven, with overwhelming riffs and solos unfolding one after another, yet the exceptional songwriting stands out. All eight tracks are highly polished, and combined with intelligent, thought-provoking lyrics, the album is worthy of being called the creative pinnacle of PARIAH/SATAN. Furthermore, the rhythm section—comprising Sean Taylor on drums and Graham English on bass—is exceptional, with their tight, high-speed playing maintaining a sense of tension throughout. Vocalist Michael Jackson also delivers what can be described as the most powerful performance of his career.
