Long-awaited tribute to Millie Scott, the first black Dutch jazz singer At long last, the wonderful jazz recordings of Millie Scott (b. 1933) are getting the attention they deserve. In Trouble in Mind, the authors have worked in close collaboration with Scott herself on a series of historic recordings from 1962 to 1966. These sessions capture her at her peak--a soulful, confident, and undeniably original artist. Millie Scott was the first black Dutch jazz vocalist and a pioneer in the fields of jazz, pop, and television entertainment. She became a household name. She became a television icon and made history in 1966 as the first black artist to represent the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest with Fernando en Filippo. Her repertoire is wide-ranging, including timeless classics, ballads, pop songs, reviews, jazz standards, and gospel. This versatility was both her talent and a challenge at the same time. She began her career as a jazz singer, and despite her true talent, her profound artistry was sometimes overshadowed by the commercial success of her lighter songs. Born Marion Henriette Louise Molly in Den Helder to Surinamese parents who immigrated to the Netherlands in search of a better life, Scott's life is truly indomitable. Her father, a Marine, died in a German POW camp during World War II. Raised by foster parents who encouraged his musicality, Scott studied Bach but secretly played boogie-woogie; at age 15, he surprised his colleagues by singing Nat King Cole's "That's the Beginning of the End" with piano accompaniment.
