Description:

This is a collection of piano works by Stenhammar (1871-1927), one of Sweden's most important composers. He conducted many orchestras, including the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, and is highly respected both as a conductor and a composer, but he is not yet well known in Japan. His early style was in the vein of late Romanticism, and he is known for his subsequent exploration of the uniquely Scandinavian sound, which led to a gradual shift from German-style music to more concise and refined music. The three works recorded here were written between 1895 and 1914, and the clear difference in impression between the "Fantastic Pieces," reminiscent of Schumann and Brahms, and "Late Summer Nights," which seems to reflect a Nordic landscape, is astonishing.
