Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book, a 5LP set, now available as a 3CD set with 24-page booklet In 1959, Norman Granz produced the 5LP Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book. The album was one of the most ambitious projects Granz undertook with Ella. Prior to Ella's Gershwin Tribute, various multi-LP sets had been released, but these were primarily collections of classical music, popular music, and jazz works that covered the career of a particular artist at length. This set, on the other hand, features 59 new recordings made over a short period of eight months, from January to August 1959. By the time Ella made this set, she had already recorded songbooks by Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers & Lorenz Hart, Duke Ellington, and Irving Berlin.She also tried her hand at the Gershwin songbook in 1950, when she was still with Decca. The Decca 10-inch LP is titled "Ella Sings Gerswhin" (Decca, 10-inch LP DL5300) and contains eight songs, sung in duo with pianist Ellis Larkins. There is one more duet with Larkins, entitled "Nice Work If You Can Get It," on the 12-inch LP Songs in a Mellow Mood (Decca DL8068), recorded at Decca on March 30, 1954. All nine songs are included on this release as bonus tracks at the end of disc 3. The two instrumental tracks at the beginning were on a separate disc in the original LP set.
