These works were composed for Ascension Day, which celebrates the ascension of the resurrected Jesus Christ into heaven. The music for Ascension Day features a collection of masterpieces, beginning with Cantata No. 11, also known as the “Ascension Oratorio.” Cantata No. 43 is a splendid two-part work featuring trumpets. Cantata No. 37 is notable for its beautiful tenor aria. Cantata No. 128 is a soaring work that proclaims, “Following Jesus’ Ascension, I too shall ascend.” Cantata No. 11 is a magnificent piece featuring prominent roles for trumpets and timpani.
