Based in Toronto, HOLYFUCK is a four-piece band pushing the boundaries of human-powered electronica. With their rock-solid lineup—BRIAN BORCHERDT, GRAHAM WALSH, MATT MCQUAID, and MATT SCHULZ—they continue to craft a unique soundscape that prioritizes the energy and spontaneity of live performance, eschewing laptops and loops. Since their formation in 2005, this maverick group has taken festivals around the world by storm with a thrilling sound that fuses punk energy with minimalism. Six years have passed since their 2020 release, *DELETER*. Following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, this 2026 album was recorded in a community hall in a tranquil village in Nova Scotia, where the flame was reignited. This is their sixth full-length album, recorded without click tracks, relying instead on a perfect, unspoken synergy among the four members—sharing not only a physical groove but even the synapses in their brains. An ambitious work where an unintentionally quiet ensemble, born out of consideration for the neighbors, ultimately yields a rich, deep texture. "EVIE," where pulsating basslines and glowing synths trace infinite loops; "GOLDFLAKES," where dreamy krautrock rhythms are layered with musique concrète-style collages; and "ELEVATE," an epic techno track where GRAHAM—a fan of ORBITAL and UNDERWORLD—pursues the euphoria of the dance floor. All 11 tracks are filled with organic dynamism. In the mid-album track "CZAR," swaggering rhythms reminiscent of JDILLA intertwine with spontaneous noise, carving out the band’s signature irregular thrills. The album expands its sonic depth by incorporating the harp of MAIRICHAIMBEUL—a member of QUILTING, the ambient project led by BRIANBORCHERDT—and the South Asian string instrument sarangi played by SAHARAJANENASR. By setting aside their usual array of guest artists and returning to a pure dialogue among the four members, they have achieved a monumental result with an unprecedented intimacy and a sound brimming with humanity.
