Missa Benevola, the new recording on this album, consists of four choral groups, and the instrumental colors are further emphasized to allow the listener to appreciate the dance between the four separate ensembles, a mule technique that Handel noted 50 years later and reused in his Messiah ("holding the mule" (tenere la mula), or simply "la mula," referring to their distinctive dramatic devices favored by the 17th century Counter-Reformation Roman composers). In addition to Benevoli's work, the "Tale of Efta" by Giacomo Carissimi, a contemporary of Benevoli and the first important oratorio composer, is tuned to the lower pitch used in Rome at the time, injecting more profound color into both the individual voices and the famous final chorus. The "Tale of Ephta" by Giacomo Carissimi is tuned to the lower pitch used in Rome at that time. *Recording:June 12-14, 2024, St. Jude on the Hill Church, London, England. (Tokyo M-Plus)
