This is a bargain priced disc featuring orchestral works selected from Tchaikovsky's masterpieces performed by the Russian National Orchestra led by Mikhail Pletnyov. In 1990, the Russian National Orchestra became the first privately funded orchestra in Russia, after investing his own money and working hard to obtain various sponsors, including foundations and corporations. The orchestra, with its high standard of musicianship and high level of ambition, made its debut in November 1990 with great success, and since then has been performing regularly in its home city of Moscow as well as in many countries around the world. Pletnyov, who has an extraordinary passion for Tchaikovsky, has been performing the most important repertoire of the orchestra since its foundation.Pletnyov is a sensitive musician throughout, and his refined orchestral works by Tchaikovsky are masterpieces of the utmost beauty. This disc includes the "Slavonic March," composed for a benefit concert to raise funds for the relief of wounded soldiers during the Serbian War of Independence; the "Coronation March," composed for the coronation of Alexander III; "Romeo and Juliet," based on a story from Shakespeare's play; "Francesca da Rimini," from Dante's "Divine Comedy," Inferno, Part V; and "Tchaikovsky's 'Rimini,'" a piece that was composed for a concert in Italy. The program includes "Francesca da Rimini" based on a song by Shakespeare, and "Italian Fantasy" composed from folk songs and military bugles heard during a stay in Italy. In addition to the excellence of the performances, the recordings are made by the technical team of the PENTATONE label, and you can enjoy the superb high sound quality recordings with multi-channel compatibility, recorded with DSD recording technology.
