Set in 19th-century Paris, the story follows Violetta, a beautiful high-class courtesan suffering from tuberculosis, who leads a life of hedonism to escape the foreboding of her impending death. However, moved by the sincere courtship of the young Alfredo, she abandons her glamorous life and begins living with him in the suburbs of Paris. But then Germont, Alfredo’s father—who does not approve of their relationship—appears and demands that she part ways with his son. For the sake of her beloved, Violetta withdraws of her own accord, though not without anguish. Meanwhile, Alfred, unaware of this, mistakenly believes he has been abandoned and condemns Violetta. Without saying a word, Violetta lies on her deathbed. Alfred, having learned the truth from Germont’s letter, rushes to her side— This opera is packed with popular melodies such as “The Drinking Song” and “Farewell, Days of Yore.” Film director Benoît Jacquot uses a traditional yet visually striking staging to highlight the contrast between the first and second halves of the work.
