Verdi (1813-1901)
Description:
This is a video of the premiere of "An Evening Prayer in Sicily" at Covent Garden in 2013, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Verdi's birth. Verdi's opera "An Evening Prayer in Sicily" is known only through the overture or Maria Callas' technical bolero "Thank you, my dear friends". It is rarely performed, and the Italian version is the most common, but it was originally commissioned by the manager of the Paris Opera, Roquebrun, in 1854, to Verdi to perform at the first Paris Exposition Universelle, to a French libretto by Eugène Scribe and Charles Du Voillier (this libretto was written by the composer himself). (Donizetti had already composed music for this script, "The Duke of Alba," but he died in the middle of the work.)In writing this piece, Verdi adopted the musical style of Maierbeer, incorporating grand scale and color, and despite a series of problems in the run-up to the premiere, it managed to be performed with great success on June 13, 1855. The success of the production led to its premiere in Italy in December, but the play was censorily rejected, so the title was changed and the play was performed with some minor changes, but the original title was eventually restored. The story is based on an actual riot that took place in Palermo, Sicily in 1282, and is centered on the tragic love between Hélène, the sister of the King of Sicily, and Henri, a young citizen (actually the son of the French Governor, the enemy of Sicily), and the battle between Sicily and France. The singers in the leading roles are required to be highly skilled and expressive (almost superhuman). Haroutunian, who plays Hélène, is a promising Armenian soprano who studied in France.Immer as Henri is acclaimed as one of the best Verdi tenors of the moment. Schrott, who sings the doctor Procida, is also a wonderful villain, leading the story toward its final tragedy. Pappano's all-encompassing conducting breathes new life into this dramatic and magnificent opera. 30-minute making-of featurette included. Warner Music Japan
