Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra

Description:

World premiere! The eighth installment in the Concertgebouw Orchestra's ambitious Horizon series, the prestigious Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's series featuring music of the same period. This time it includes the world premieres of two works commissioned by the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The first is a trombone concerto by Scottish composer James MacMillan. The Concertgebouw Orchestra's principal trombonist, Jorgen van Rijn, asked MacMillan to write a concerto for trombone, and MacMillan, who was originally enamored with the instrument, did not refuse. It was written as a joint commission for five orchestras and premiered at the Concertgebouw in April 2017. The Nasimi Passion, by Azerbaijani composer Frangis Ali-Zadeh, is based on a text by the 14th century Azerbaijani poet Imaduddin Nasimi. The Concertgebouw Orchestra regularly performs the Matthew Passion on the Sunday before Easter each year, a tradition started in 1898 by Mengelberg and continued by Arnoncourt and others. As of 2018, in addition to Bach's Passions, the orchestra alternates Passions by contemporary composers, and has performed works by James MacMillan, Frank Martin, and others, with the recent premiere of Frangis Ali-Zadeh's "Nasimi Passion" in April 2017. And Oliver Nassen's Horn Concerto. Written for British horn virtuoso Barry Tuckwell, it was a work in the 1994 Suntory Hall International Composition Commission Series. It is recorded here, performed by former Concertgebouw Orchestra principal horn player Felix Deveau. King International
