Description:
Rossini's "Cenerentola" by Emma Dante, an Italian female director with a strong personality. The performance marked the 200th anniversary of the opera's premiere on January 25, 1817 at the Teatro Valle in Rome. Rossini composed 39 operas in 20 years, but retired as an opera composer at the young age of 37. ≪Cenerentola" is located right in the middle of his active period and is known as his masterpiece of opera buffa, second only to "The Barber of Seville," composed the previous year. Cenerentola means "Cinderella" in Italian. The story is based on Perrault's famous fairy tale, but the magical and fairy tale elements, such as the glass slipper and the pumpkin carriage, that are commonly known have been removed, and the story is more realistic. The synopsis is that the main character Cenerentola (=Angelina) lives with her stepfather Don Manifico (not her stepmother) and his sisters (Clorinda and Teizbe), who treat her like a servant and bully her.One day, a ball is held to choose a queen for the castle. The prince (Don Ramillo) and his squire (Dandini) decide to change each other's clothes and look for a potential bride, hiding their identities as princes. There they meet the kind-hearted Angelina, who gives the prince a bracelet and leaves, but he finds Cenerentola and the two are united. This is the story of the two. The production is directed by Emma Dante from Palermo, Sicily, who is also active in theater and film. The production fully resonates with Rossini's intention to write in a realistic manner with less fairy-tale elements, and the stage is surreal and eccentric with a modern perspective. The protagonist Cenerentola is played by Italian mezzo-soprano Serena Malfi, born in 1985. Like Cenerentola, who forges her own destiny, she exudes an overwhelming presence with her powerful and sensual voice. The role of Prince Don Ramilo is played by Juan Francisco Gater from Argentina, who is attracting attention as a sweet tenor. This is a Rossini buffa in which the singers' vocal and acting skills are put to the test, and the excellent singers are full of listening pleasure. The conductor is the young Argentinean Alejo Perez. He made his Salzburg Festival debut in 2015 with Massenet's "Werther" and returned the following year in 2016 to wield Gounod's "Faust," which was much talked about. He will propel the unique performers with overwhelming power. King International
