The dialogue between Boulez, Barenboim, and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (VPO) is highly original; the VPO’s exceptional stability and Boulez’s razor-sharp intellect give rise to a new kind of drama in collaboration with Barenboim. As for Boulez’s *The Firebird*, while his legendary performances with the Chicago Symphony and the New York Philharmonic remain iconic interpretations of this work, his partner this time is the VPO. The VPO’s *The Firebird* is still fresh in our memories from their 2000 performance with Gergiev at the Salzburg Festival. The performance with Boulez is brimming with the VPO’s charm, with beauty taking center stage. In the first half, the woodwinds and strings weave the melody with exquisite beauty, and in “The Dance of the Firebird,” they dance vividly with exquisite expression. While the “Princess’s Rondo” is not particularly rich in expression, the dialogue between the oboe and violin is beautiful, the climax is powerful, and the performance—with its flawless precision and palpable tension—is simply breathtaking.
