Vivaldi's concertos for bassoon are the largest group of works after his concertos for violin, with more than 39 surviving pieces and only two unfinished works. But what is remarkable beyond these details is Vivaldi's extraordinary understanding of the technical possibilities of the bassoon, reflected in his avant-garde treatment of the instrument, which has achieved full and sumptuous dignity as a soloist. And perhaps unprecedented in the history of music is his intuition for its expressive power. The soloist on this album is Paolo Carlini, one of Italy's leading virtuosos, who has been the principal bassoonist of the Orchestre de Toscana since 1987.Formed in 1989, the ensemble, with I Virtuosi Italiani and Maestro Alberto Martini, who have collaborated with many internationally renowned soloists and conductors, will perform the charms of Vivaldi's most important works dedicated to the bassoon with superb technique and polished tone quality.
