Grieg, Sibelius, and Debussy; a superb album of songs by French soprano Karen Vrch, who spent her childhood in northern Norway and later spent her summer vacations on an island south of Oslo where she let time pass her by in a relaxed manner. A charming album. Songs composed on German poems by Goethe and von Bodenstedt translated into Nordic languages ("In the Season of Roses," "Dream") are often sung in German, but Vurch's careful choice of language is impressive, as she sings them in Nordic. He delicately sings the character of each work, from the noble and melancholic nature of the Grieg songs to the passionate love of the Sibelius songs. The final song, "Beautiful Evening," chosen for the coupling, "evokes contemplative nature and the natural cycle of water and human life," as Vrch said.From the beginning of the disc to the end, this is an excellent piece that gives us a sense of the nature that surrounds us, sometimes intensely, sometimes peacefully.
