Luigi's dramatic singing of Martin's "Songs of Love and Death of Christoph Rilke the Flagbearer" Okka von der Damrau! Frank Martin's "Songs of Love and Death of Christoph Rilke the Flagbearer," a collection of songs for alto and orchestra, was composed by Martin, who was very fond of a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, introduced to him by his wife. Composers such as Paul von Klenau, Victor Ullmann, and Siegfried Matus wrote works of the same name, and many musicians have been attracted to the rhythmic and varied sound of the words. This poem by Rilke describes the fate of a young soldier who was killed in battle during the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Holy Alliance, including Austria, Poland, Venice, and Russia, over Hungary and Transylvania in the late 17th century. The heartache of his pride as a soldier, his fear of death, and his feelings for the family and loved ones he left behind are carefully written, and Martin composed this during World War II. It is a stirring piece that reflects the emptiness of war and the tense atmosphere.This recording is a live concert from December 2016 at the Zurich Opera House with the Philharmonia Zurich led by Fabio Luisi and the acclaimed and richly-voiced Okka von der Damrau as soloist in Wagner and Verdi operas.
