Raff, Joachim (1822-82)

Description:

In the 19th century, when chamber music for keyboard and strings was favored, the composition of "four strings and piano" was considered to require a high level of compositional skill, as it was considered extremely difficult to harmonize the balance between the instruments and the melodic context. This CD contains piano quintets by two Swiss composers, Joseph Joachim Ruff, who was born in Switzerland, and Hermann Goetz, who emigrated from Germany to Switzerland. The works are all attempts to evolve the piano trio and string quartet styles that dominated until the beginning of the 19th century. Swiss music critic Werner Pfister commented, "The double bass is often shunned in compositions with only five players, but unlike Schubert, who had no choice but to do so, Goetz's daring to have this eloquent and delicate bass present for that effect is a major turning point in the history of Swiss music. The high quality sound produced by Wolfram Burgert, Michelangeli's former secretary and a well-known name in audio engineering, is also worth listening to, and will become a Swiss specialty next to chocolate, cheese, and watches," wrote a review in the Swiss arts magazine Musik und Theater. Il Trittico" is a piano trio with Jonathan Allen (violin), Daniel Petzotti (cello), and Jan Schulz (piano). Joining Ruff's quintet as 2nd violin is Anahit Kurtican, head of second violin at the Zurich Opera House. The viola is played by David Greenlees, a native of England and head of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. On contrabass is Dariusz Misela, a native of Poland who has served as principal of the Swedish Malmo Symphony Orchestra, principal of the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra, and principal of the Zurich Opera House.
