Wolf-Ferrari(1876-1948)
Description:
His father was German and his mother Italian. Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) was a composer of "the best of both worlds," writing German-style chamber music in his early years and eventually achieving great success with comedies in the spirit of opera buffa. It is a pity that today his name is known only by the interlude from "The Jewel of the Madonna. He wrote excellent operas that rivaled those of Puccini and R. Strauss, but World War I took its toll on his mental health, and for a time he seemed to lose the will to create. After that, he recovered and began to focus more on orchestral works such as those recorded here rather than operas. The somber expression that quietly appears and disappears amidst the beautiful music makes these tasteful and deep. Naxos Japan
