Lehár liked to incorporate regional elements into his works—whether Hungarian, Czech, or Chinese. Composed in 1920, when he was 50 years old, this operetta, *The Blue Mazurka*, features—as the title suggests—a Polish-style libretto (though it also has some Chinese elements). Although there is a touch of suspense, the music never loses its cheerfulness, and the characters are always dancing. This gem of a score earned Lehár tremendous acclaim at its premiere.
