A new dimension of minimal jazz—freely and quietly intense, with an ecstatic ambiance that leads to deep listening The Jeff Parker ETA Quartet is led by guitarist Jeff Parker—who also made a name for himself as a member of Tortoise—and features saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butters, and drummer Jay Bellarose. Three of the members—Parker, Butters, and Johnson—have also garnered attention for their participation in Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea’s solo debut album, *Honora* (2026). The quartet emerged from a weekly residency Parker launched in 2016 at ETA, a venue in northeast Los Angeles. Their latest album, *HappyToday*, will be released by Chicago’s prestigious label International Anthem, just like their previous two albums. This album captures the band’s state as of 2025, having evolved from the residency that began at the ETA venue in Los Angeles in 2016. Featuring saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butters, and drummer Jay Bellarose, the band delivers minimalist, genre-spanning improvisations. Recorded and mixed live during a performance at LodgeRoom on August 20, 2025, the album features two extended tracks, each spanning the length of an LP side. The soundscape captured by engineer Bryce Gonzalez using custom-built equipment vividly captures the fleeting sense of elation and solidarity born during these challenging times. Alongside Parker’s energetic recent activities, such as his appearance on NPR’s Tiny Desk, this is a significant work that embodies the band’s essence: the power of “the moment” and “dialogue.”
