In commemoration of the 80th birthday of Antony Lurie, a master of the British classical music world, MDG is re-releasing a masterpiece from the MDG label. This time, we will re-release a recording of the Consort of Music, a vocal ensemble organized in England in 1969 under the leadership of lute player Antony Lurie. It is re-released to celebrate Antony Lurie's 80th birthday. The ensemble has made many highly acclaimed recordings of late Renaissance and early Baroque music from England and Italy. The members of the ensemble, including soprano Emma Kirkby, are among the foremost soloists in English classical music. This is a collection of madrigals by Johann Grabbe (1585-1655), a German composer of the same generation as Schütz, who became a member of the Bückeburg court choir at the age of 11, studied organ with Cornelius Conradus, and after a successful career as an organist went to Venice to study with Giovanni Gabrieli and studied with him, leaving behind works in the Italian style of madrigals. However, none of his madrigals are extant except for the first collection.The quintessence of his originality and compositional technique, Antony Lurie considers this madrigale to be a masterpiece on par with Monteverdi. A series of mishaps, anguish, and occasional joys in this love story, and finally the madness of a woman in love, Emma Kirkby's glorious soprano is a must-hear. King International
