Description:
The new recordings of Weber's clarinet concertos by clarinet virtuoso Paul Meyer were all written for his friend Heinrich Josef Behrmann, clarinetist in the Munich court orchestra. The piece was completed in just two weeks and premiered three days later in the presence of King Maximilian I of Bavaria with great success. Maximilian I was so impressed with the piece and the performance that he asked Weber to compose two more pieces, the first of which, No. 1 in F minor, was written in two months from April to May, and the second was completed the following June with surprising speed. The work, however, was completed at a very high level, and the virtuosity of the clarinet was on full display in this gorgeous work.French clarinetist Paul Meyer recorded Weber's works in 1991 to high acclaim, but in this new recording, the French clarinetist is blowing for the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, which he knows very well, and he handles the technically difficult passages with ease. The orchestra is a great example of MD+G's excellent performance. MD+G's excellent recording technology captures the mellow sound of the clarinet in all its glory. Universal Music/IMS
