The album was written by members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, recorded at THE VILLAGE RECORDER in Los Angeles in August 1972, and produced by Gary Katz. It features tight song structures and soft rock, folk rock, and pop sounds, as well as philosophical and abbreviated lyrics; two songs recorded during the CAN'T BUY A THRILL sessions were removed from the album and released as singles." By the time recording began on the next album, the band and producer Gary Katz had convinced Fagen to assume the role of full lead vocalist. The album cover featured a photomontage by Robert Lockert that included an image of a row of prostitutes waiting for customers in the pleasure district of Rouen, France.
