Tokyo Riddim Band

Description:

The first single from Tokyo Riddim Band, a new band transcending race, generation, and gender, featuring Izumi "Mimi" Kobayashi covering Miki Hirayama's "Microwave Oven" produced by Haruo Chikada, has arrived! Fronted by three Japanese female musicians from three different generations, the Tokyo Riddim Band features an ironclad British rhythm section including a Rasta drummer, city-pop guitars, all mixed live on stage in a dub mix. The band was formed by label owner and producer Kay Suzuki on the occasion of the release of the critically acclaimed compilation "Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985," which received rave reviews from Pitchfork, The Wire, the BBC, and many others. Since their first live performance in October last year, they have been playing sold-out shows all over London, and in March last year, they opened for Kyoto Jazz Massive at the long-established Jazz Cafe in London. The band features Izumi "Mimi" Kobayashi on keyboards, known for her participation in many compilation albums and the theme song "Lamb's Love Song" of Urusei Yatsura, as well as the late Jah Shaka, Skatalites, Ska Cubano, and others on saxophone, and Miss Megoo, who has been active in the current reggae scene in the UK. The saxophonist is Megumi Mesaku, a.k.a. Miss Megoo, who has co-written and performed with the late Jah Shaka, Skatalites, Ska Cubano, and others, and is active in the current UK reggae scene.Vocals will be provided by Ayana, a Tokyo-based jazz singer who recently moved to London to study Indian vocal performance as a member of Jazzy Sport London. Recorded, mixed, and mastered at the South London studio of Prince Fatty, a legendary producer and engineer who has made his mark on the worldwide reggae scene, the series of 7" singles will be released over the next few months. The first single is a cover of Miki Hirayama's 1982 song "Microwave," produced by Haruo Chikada and also included on the compilation. Like the original, it adopts Bob Marley's Natural Mystic redux, but with echoed vocals and siren sounds, giving it a more British, dubby feel.
