Liesager (Lisael) was born in 1897 in a city in Estonia, but returned with his family to Denmark when he was three years old. He first studied music theory, composition, and political science in Copenhagen, and from the 1920s went to France to study with Roussel, where he came into contact with the "Gang of Six" and was heavily influenced by the music of Stravinsky. He then continued his studies in Leipzig, where he went through various musical transitions and eventually brought the neoclassical style to Danish music. All of the music recorded here is very straightforward in form, conforming to the Baroque period, and is characterized by its richness of color and liveliness. His masterpiece "Fool's Paradise" is in the Stravinsky style, "The Twelve in the Mail Carriage" in the Tchaikovsky style, "Concertino" in the Baroque style, and "Daduce," subtitled "The Wedding in Peking," in the Chinese style.
