Description:
A superbly balanced live recording of "The Creation" immediately following Zubin Mehta's return from rest in 2019! Haydn's The Creation is a milestone in the history of the oratorio, a work in which Haydn set new standards far beyond the scope of Viennese classicism. Recognized for its then-novel power regarding the creation of a vibrant world, the work is characterized by beautiful picturesque, euphoric arias and a celebratory chorus. All of this underscores Haydn's timeless message, encouraging us to appreciate and preserve the beauty and diversity of creation. When Haydn was composing this oratorio, "The Creation," it was the final days of the French Revolution and much blood had just been spilled. Europe was only the first in a series of allied wars behind it. The oratorio begins with a description of chaos, but to give way after a few minutes to a shining C major. It was in the spirit of the Enlightenment that Haydn and his librettist Gottfried van Zwieten celebrated a harmonious world order. The Enlightenment had just been presented just prior to the Adam and Eve are not guilty of any sin in this oratorio. The animals, lovingly portrayed by the composer, do not even eat each other. And light shines all over the sun, which has just risen for the first time.Master Zubin Mehta, who had just returned from a long illness the year before this performance, brought out the luminous sound, structured and perfectly balanced with solo voice, chorus and orchestra, just as it was the contrast with his own reality that ensured the success of "The Creation". This performance featured a dense cast of famous opera singers, Mojca Ertman, Dimitry Kolchak, and René Parpé, but despite this cast of three, the brilliant phrasing and articulation allowed even the smallest sound scenes to be beautifully timbred repeatedly with great tone The performance was described by the South German Newspaper as "a performance of the highest caliber. Of this performance of the day, the South German newspaper said, "When Zubin Mehta conducts Haydn's 'The Creation,' it is like a trip back to the classical era in Vienna, a historic performance that blew all the gas tikes out of the water and brought it to life! The strength of the performance was its ability to follow a balanced harmonic order without being boring. Recent "Creation" performances of ancient instrumental music have succeeded in bringing the work to life, but the dynamic rough edges that are a drawback are entirely absent in Mehta's performance. It is a 'classic' in the emphatic sense of the Haydn era, and the balance of the performance is musically stabilized and brilliant," he highly praised. Warner Music Japan
