Jacobi’s long-lost masterpiece, performed by the Fortuna Reditus Ensemble led by Roberto Casso! In early 17th-century Italy, music was striving to break free from the confines of mere “interlude entertainment.” This work, L’Aurora ingannata (The Deceived Aurora), is a record of an ambitious endeavor by composer Girolamo Giacobi and poet Count Ridolfo Campeggi. This music was originally written as an “intermedio” (interlude) to be inserted between acts of the pastoral play Filarmindo, which premiered in 1605. However, Giacobbi refused to let it remain merely “disposable music.” When he published it in 1608, he gave it the unique genre name “Dramaodia” (from “drama” and “odia,” meaning “song”) and presented the interlude music to the world as a standalone musical work. This work crystallizes the ideals of the “monody style” (a single melody accompanied by music), which was at the forefront of musical innovation at the time, and “recitativo cantando” (singing as if speaking), in which words are conveyed through music. Giacobbi masterfully depicted the dramas of love and hatred among the gods by contrasting the sound of traditional choral singing with sharp “declamation” that reflected the inflections of spoken dialogue. Aurora’s unrequited love, Venus’s deceit, and Cephalus’s bewilderment as he wanders into a dream—this is the “eve of opera,” when music began to carry the words and support the inner drama. As a historical testament to early Baroque music, this work—imbued with an unprecedented sense of dramatic tension—is vividly brought back to life for the modern era by early music scholar Roberto Casso and the Fortuna Reditus Ensemble. The Fortuna Reditus Ensemble was formed in 2006 by reconfiguring the music chapel of the Church of San Giacomo , with the aim of rediscovering the musical legacy of Augustinian monks from the 16th to the 18th centuries. Founded by Roberto Casso, who serves as archlute player and director, the ensemble has recorded and published the complete known works of Ippolito Ghezzi, in addition to transcribing and performing works by composers such as Carlo Milanuzzi. The ensemble has also expanded its activities to include secular repertoire, creating its own transcriptions and releasing numerous recordings on labels such as Tactus, NovAntiqua, Echo, and DaVinciClassics.
