This is the fourth volume in the “Soviet Experience Series,” which is steadily gaining an audience thanks to its unique concept—one that seems like it should exist but didn’t before—and the superb quality of the performances. Shostakovich’s 15 string quartets—often considered his greatest masterpieces—were composed over a wide span of time, from 1938 to 1974. Each piece offers a glimpse into Shostakovich’s true feelings: while appearing to conform to the social conditions of the time, he was in fact rebelling against them. That said, his compositional style varied considerably depending on the period, and the works are known for tracing a progression from elegance to irony to introspection. This complete set by the Pacifica String Quartet not only performs these works with great care and precision but also highlights Shostakovich’s unique talent by including string quartets by other composers from the same period. It is particularly interesting how they place Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 15—which depicts a world of pure sorrow—at the end of the set, following Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3, composed in 1983, to create a striking contrast.
