One year after the release of Schubert's Improvisations (BIS SA-2614). The prodigious fortepiano player Ronald Brautigam releases Schubert's Sonatas D.959 (No. 20) and D.960 (No. 21). Brautiham has performed and recorded keyboard works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The Schubert Sonata is a masterpiece.This is the finest performance of Schubert in his later years, showing that he had reached new heights. A new masterpiece is born, heard through the warm tones of the fortepiano. This performance uses a replica of the Konrad Graf (made in 1819) made by Paul McNulty, a contemporary master craftsman. Brautigam said, "Playing his replica gives me new inspiration in terms of interpretation," and this performance proves how important it is to play a replica of the instrument that the composer would have used.
