Description:
Péter Mattei sings Pettechon's songs "Barefoot Song" and "Six Songs" on this SACD hybrid disc. Swedish composer Allan Pettechon is known exclusively for his solid symphonic works, which he wrote intensively after 1950. However, earlier, when he was a student at the College of Music in Stockholm and a viola player at the Stockholm Philharmonic, he composed chamber music and song cycles. One of these song cycles, "Barefoot Songs," written between 1943 and 1945, would remain important to him for the rest of his life, with several songs quoted in later symphonic works. The "Barefoot Songs" are autobiographical in content, reflecting his childhood in a poor working-class neighborhood, and were composed on 24 poems written by Pétesson himself, in a very personal and old-fashioned language. The "Six Songs" of 1935, written on five poems by Gunnar Björling and Ingeborg Björklund, was not intended to be a "song cycle. The recording was made by baritone Peter Mattei and pianist Bengt-Oke Lundin, with whom he has collaborated for nearly 30 years.Mattei's recording of Schubert's "Winterreise" (BIS SA-2444), which shares the same keynote of "pain," is an album that was highly acclaimed by the German media, which is said to be a dedicated audience for Pettechon's music.
