Description:
Dima Slobodenyuk records Stravinsky's fascinating "symphonies" on this SACD hybrid disc! Stravinsky is famous for his ballet and orchestral music such as "The Firebird," "Petrushka," and "The Rite of Spring," and he is not the kind of composer one associates with symphonic works. However, the five symphonies he composed are all unique and have different characters. This album is the first of three such works. The Symphony in Three Movements, the first major work Stravinsky composed in the United States, is like The Rite of Spring with its rhythmic ostinato and exciting sound effects. Composed during World War II, it sounds like Stravinsky's message against war. The "Symphony for Winds" is a short, compact work composed as a tribute to Stravinsky's friend Claude Debussy. The plural form of the word "Symphonies" suggests an attempt to create music that "rings together" rather than in the form of a symphony. The kaleidoscopic form, which astonished audiences at its premiere, is now considered one of Stravinsky's most original and masterful works. The "Symphony in C" is a simple and humorous work composed between 1938 and 1940 on two continents during the war. Conductor Dima Slobodenyuk, born in Moscow in 1975, moved to Finland at the age of 17 to study conducting at the Sibelius Academy with Leif Segerstam and Jorma Panula, and served as principal conductor of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra from 2016 to 2021. , Prokofiev, Britten: Sinfonietta Collection" (BIS SA-2601), "Scenes from Kalevala" (BIS SA-2371), "Kalevi Aho: Concerto "Siedi", Symphony No. 5" (BIS SA-2336), "Prokofiev: Four Depictions and Conclusion from the Opera "The Gamblers, Suite from the ballet "Stone Flower" (BIS SA-2301). This performance is with the Galician Symphony Orchestra, of which he was music director from 2012 to 2022.The compositions are a wonderful example of Stravinsky's multifaceted and fascinating side, which has constantly changed and evolved in style.
