Description:
The first collection of Bach's harpsichord concertos played by BCJ Chief Conductor Yuto Suzuki! !SACD Hybrid Edition.Masato Suzuki, who assumed the position of Chief Conductor of the Bach Collegium Japan in September 2018, has begun recording Bach's complete concertos for harpsichord and strings, and this is the first release of this series. Having already released a collection of concertos for two harpsichords (KKC 5496 / BIS SA 2051) performed with Masaaki Suzuki, Masato Suzuki has now recorded eight concertos for solo harpsichord and strings. The concertos for solo harpsichord and string orchestra, most of which are arrangements of concertos for other instruments by Bach and other composers, are remarkable works that elevate the harpsichord from a passive bass to a solo instrument. The arrangements of No. 1 in D minor, BWV 1052, an arrangement of a lost violin concerto, No. 2 in E major, BWV 1053, an arrangement of a lost oboe concerto, and No. 5 in F minor, BWV 1056, famous for its beautiful largo melody, all feature Bach's exceptional talent for combining a gorgeous harpsichord solo with string music. The combination of the solo harpsichord and the string orchestra is very attractive. As only the first eight and a half bars of the first movement of Concerto No. 8 in D minor, BWV 1059R, are extant, the recording was made from a version restored by Yuto Suzuki. The first movement is the introductory sinfonia of Cantata No. 35 BWV35, the second movement is the second "Aria" of BWV35, and the third movement is a restoration from the Sinfonia of BWV35 No. 5. The third movement is also restored from the fifth Sinfonia. The piece is performed in the style of an Italian concerto with a fast-moderate-steep tempo. In the original BWV35, there are three oboe parts, but here the oboe is arranged as a single part. As a result, especially in the second movement, the oboe and harpsichord play beautifully together. This is a one-of-a-kind album that demonstrates the versatility of Yuto Suzuki, and is a must-see!
