The prodigious Michael Collins shakes Vaughan-Williams' Symphony No. 5! Clarinetist and conductor Michael Collins, who was awarded the Fifth Order of the British Empire in 2015, joins the Philharmonia Orchestra for a recording of his native composer Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 5 and Finzi's Clarinet Concerto. Clarinet Concerto with the Philharmonia Orchestra! Collins began playing clarinet at the age of eight and was named BBC Young Musician of the Year at age 16. He also won the first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition in New York City and made his Carnegie Hall debut. For many years, he was the principal clarinetist of the Philharmonia Orchestra, led by the late Giuseppe Sinopoli, and was also active as a soloist. He is currently expanding his activities as a conductor. Vaughan-Williams' Symphony No. 5, dedicated to Sibelius, was composed between 1938 and 1943 during the war, and its premiere was held at the Royal Albert Hall on June 24, 1943, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Vaughan-Williams.The smallest of Vaughan-Williams' symphonies, it shares much of the same material as his opera "Tenro Rekisho," which was being composed at the same time. On the other hand, Finzi is famous for his vocal music. Among Finzi's few instrumental works is the Concerto for Clarinet, in which he put a beautiful melody on the clarinet, the most vocal instrument of all.
