The Norwegian quartet Engegård Quartet presents Schumann in a slow and deliberate manner on this SACD hybrid disc. Following the Grieg & Sibelius album (BISSA2101), the second release on the BIS label features Schumann. Schumann's three string quartets were written in a short period of time between June and July 1842. Influenced by the string quartets of Beethoven's later period, No. 1 in A minor is one of Schumann's masterpieces, full of romantic and poetic sentiment. No. 2 in F major is bright and smooth lyrically. No. 3 in A major is the most frequently performed of the three, and is a bright and beautiful work. In this performance, the Engegård Quartet presents an ensemble with a crisp style, but with a slow and deliberate approach to the music.In addition to the BIS label, the Engegor Quartet is also known for its high-quality recordings on the 2L label, which includes the "String Quartets" Vol. 1 (Haydn in D major, Leif Sullberg, Grieg (2L53SACD)), Vol. 2 (Beethoven's "Harp", Nurheim, Bartok No. 3 (2L071 SACD)), Collection 3 (Haydn in G major, Bartok No. 5 (2L091SACD)), and Collection 4 (Schubert's Rosamunde, Latche's Tale of Lead and Light, Britten's No. 2, and others (2L105SABD)) have also been released to great acclaim.
