Description:

The "classical" string quartet of two violins, viola and cello, and the quintet with piano combination were inspired in the 19th century by Robert Schumann, Brahms, Franck, Dvořák, and Fauré, after the works of Boccherini, Dvořák, and Fauré. The Bengt Forsberg and Friends album features two little-known piano quintets written between Post-Romanticism and Modernism. Georgy Lvovich Catoire (1861-1926) was a Russian composer born into a French family. He studied piano with Carl Klintvold at the Moscow Conservatory and then went to Germany to study. A few years after his return, he moved to the countryside away from Moscow, where he is said to have devoted himself to compositional research and creation, except for meetings with Taneyev and Arensky, until 1916, when he was appointed a professor at the Moscow Conservatory. The Piano Quintet in G minor was published in 1921. It is in three movements: Allegro moderato, Andante, and Allegro con spirito e capriccioso. The original harmonic and rhythmic structure, as well as the melancholy atmosphere, make this work one of Catoire's most outstanding and appealing. Ignatie Friedman (1882-1948), born in Poland, is known more as one of the leading pianists of the 20th century than as a composer. The "Piano Quintet in C minor" was written in 1918. The first movement has a solemn mood that is said to be overshadowed by World War I. The second movement has a theme and six unique variations, and the third movement, "Epilogue," has a Polish folk song as its theme. The violinist Nils-Erik Sparff, a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and well-known for his many recordings for the BIS label, and Ulf Forsberg, a member of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, will be performing the first movement, which is austere in mood, the second movement, which has a theme and six variations on a unique theme, and the third movement, "Epilogue," which has a Polish folk song theme. Ulf Forsberg, a member of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra; Ellen Nisbet, who recorded the album "Awake, O Beautiful One" (BISSA-2181); and Andreas Branterlied, who recorded Grieg, Grainger, Carl Nilsen (BISSA-2120) and Faure (BISSA-2220).An ensemble of friends who enjoy playing chamber music with Forsberg.
