The young driving force who propelled Dutch trombone playing to the very pinnacle of the world stage— Jorgen van Rijen, principal trombonist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, presents his third release on Channel Classics! Beginning with his appointment to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in 1997, Van Ryen went on to win both the highly competitive Gebwiler International Competition (1999) and the Toulon International Competition (2001). In the summer of 2007, he participated as principal trombonist with the Abbado & Lucerne Festival Orchestra, delivering a breathtaking solo in the first movement of Mahler’s “Symphony No. 3” that earned him worldwide acclaim; van Rijen, a leading figure in the trombone world, continues to gain momentum. Following his previous album (CCSSA26708), which showcased the sound of a genuine “sackbut,” this third recording marks Ryen’s return to the “trombone.” The program is particularly noteworthy for its richness, featuring standards of the trombone repertoire—such as works by Martin, Jongen, and Goubert—in a duo with the virtuoso Giacometti, as well as “Castellade” in a duo with Frits Damrow, principal trumpet of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The program also features Mozart arias with tenor Beekman, short pieces by the Dutch composer Padding, and the ambitious work “I Was Like Wow!” by the maverick Feldhaus—based on the words of an Iraq veteran—demonstrate his tremendous passion for exploring new repertoire.
