Witch, a Zambian band led by Zamrock leader Jagali, is back. Their first new album in almost 40 years, "XANGO," is released on the Partisan Records imprint, Desert Days Sound. The story of Zambia's greatest rock band is the story of Zamrock itself. It is a legend lost to time until just a few years ago, but the mighty WITCH and its glorious garage, blues, and psychedelic rock are far from over. On their first new album in nearly 40 years, "Zango," Zamrock finally comes to life, full of international and intergenerational collaborations from Zambia and other parts of the world's musical history.WITCH started in the 60s, when Emmanuel 'Jagari' Chanda and his friends were obsessed with copying "Melody Maker" as the sounds of British radio permeated the city, and by the mid-70s they were at the center of a scene playing rock and roll with African percussive rhythms.It was called "Zamrock" and WITCH (We Intend to Cause Havoc) was notorious for their seven-hour shows and incendiary acts on stage. The media dubbed them "The Beatles of Zambia" and they became popular throughout southern Africa, but economic crisis, social restrictions, and the spread of AIDS led to Jagari's departure in 1977. The band ceased to exist. But in 2011, Now-Again Records reissued songs spanning WITCH's career and they made an unexpected comeback. And in 2021, WITCH veterans Jagari and Patrick returned to the studio. The album, Zango, will be the first release under Partisan Records' new imprint, Desert Daze Sound.
