The Nigerian regime labeled the residents of Kalakuta Republic (the name Fela Kuti gave to the communal compound where his family, band members, and recording studio were located) as "riffraff" and "hemp smokers. Noise For Vendor Mouth" expresses Fela's indifference to such appellations. To him, the people of Kalakuta were a group of hardworking citizens trying to survive in a society riddled with corruption and mismanagement, and the real nooses were those in power.
