Never Say Yes - 1986" is an album of previously unreleased archival recordings by Doug Rainey, an American guitarist active in the Scandinavian jazz scene for many years. Doug Rainey (Laney) was born in 1956 in New York City. He formed a duo with his father in 1977, and after touring Europe with the duo, they moved to Copenhagen. In 1978, he released his first leader album. He played with many players including Chet Baker, John McNeil, Red Mitchell, Horace Parran, Hugo Rasmussen, and Bernd Roussengren. died in Copenhagen in May 2016.The sessions for Never Say Yes - 1986 took place as a "studio live" at Studio 3 of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation on January 9, 1986. The quartet consisted of Doug Rainey on guitar, Ben Besiakou on piano, Jesper Longo on bass, and Finland's Jukkis Uotila on drums. Seven modern jazz standards, including the Oscar Peterson tune of the album title, Romburgh and Oscar Hammerstein's "As Breezy as the Morning Sun," and John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," are performed with varied interplay, elegance, and brilliant technique. The performance features a variety of interplay, elegance, and brilliant technique. Recorded January 9, 1986 at Studio 3, Danish Radio (DR), Copenhagen.
