Norway's Lofoten archipelago consists of islands large and small, including Austvåg, Moskenes, and the isolated islands of Vaal and Lost, and is known for its natural beauty and mild climate, despite its arctic location. The region has flourished for nearly a millennium as a base for the cod and herring fishery, one of the cornerstones of the Norwegian economy, while artists have drawn inspiration from the sea and mountains, capturing their nature and appearance in paintings, photographs, and writings. The Lofoten Oratorio is one such work of art. The composer, Šetil Bjørnstad (1952-), has worked mainly as a jazz musician and composer. The "Lofoten Oratorio" is "a tribute to Lofoten, to the people of the North, and to the solid way of life of the people.The texts include a variety of poems by poets of different styles, including Terje Johansen, Ingri Arktandel, and Jan P. Barre, and "Between Mosken and Lofoten" features an excerpt from Edgar Allan Poe's short story "A Descent into the Maelstrom" set in Lofoten, translated into Norwegian.
