Known as the "Father of Libyan Reggae," Ibrahim Hesnawi pioneered the fusion of traditional Libyan music and Jamaican reggae styles, blending funk, jazz, and disco tastes in his new album, Habibi Funk, which is a collection of previously unreleased material from the late 1970s! The first track you should listen to is "Never Understand". A killer track that combines roots and dancehall tastes with North African, Middle Eastern and Jamaican styles. Fat keys, equally fat and bouncy bass, and English lyrics make this song sound like a cut from Bob Marley. The funky "Tendme" (also on the Habibi Funk compilation (HABIBI015)) and "Watery Al Kabir" are also recommended. Both play a wistful harmony motif and bring a tireless groove to the album.
