He left many works for viol in the turbulent history of music from William Byrd to Henry Purcell. Known especially for his contribution to the Fantasia for viol consort, he was inspired in the 1630s by a generation of composers such as Alfonso Ferrabosco II, Thomas Lupo, and Orlando Gibbons, whose works are distinguished by their rich lyricism, masterful technique, and unique approach to tonality and counterpoint.
