The latest release from La Serenissima, one of the UK's leading period ensembles! La Serenissima is a renowned period ensemble founded by Adrian Chandler, one of Britain's foremost baroque violinists. Their latest release is a celebration of the life and work of the young Nicola Matteis (c1677-1737), a two-time Gramophone Award winner who has made a series of world premiere recordings of Vivaldi and other unknown and rediscovered works! Born in London to an Italian father and English mother, Matteis was steeped in the style of Henry Purcell before leaving England in 1700 for the court of Vienna. It would be easy to assume that the English style and English musicians were unknown on the continent in the early 18th century, but the selection of music in this work shows that this was not the case. In addition to some wonderful dances and suites, there is a stunningly beautiful Vivaldi concerto and two wonderful chaconnes, one by an Englishman (Purcell) and the other by an Italian (Breschanello).
